Neighbor with HOA violations joins the board to dismantle the whole organization: 'I'm now researching how to dissolve it entirely'

Sometimes, the only way to change the system is to do it from the inside. These are the kinds of lessons imparted to us from science fiction movies about corruption in galaxies far, far away. Of course, it comes as no surprise to know that this messaging actually does apply to our own galaxy from time to time, both on a macro and micro scale.

Sure, you can apply this mentality to international relations, but you can also apply it to the most niche system in your own personal universe. Whether it's the parents' association at your kids' school or the leasing office in your apartment building, there comes a time in one's adult life when it becomes crystal clear that the only way you can correct a flaw in a particular system is to make it your mission by doing it from within. That's what this neighbor decided to do after he and his wife received a ton of unnecessary fees for HOA violations in their community.

  • Let's start with the wife's first mention of her husband's ulterior motive. Instead of fighting off the HOA violations further, he decided to step in and charm his way into becoming president of the whole board to alter the rules and make living in this community easier not just for himself but for other new members of the neighborhood.     I would look at what the HOA offers, look for things that can be cut, reduce the fees to minimums so that the coffers are still being replenished but not turning a profit.

    Then look into rules that are already covered by local or state ordnances and either reduce them to "refer to state ordnance" or chop it out entirely.

    One of the rules dad tossed was how many vehicles could be on the property - original rule was 2 per household, and he changed it to unlimited as long as they were registered and insured.

  • Now, for the update after a tense board meeting in which a neighborhood Karen tried to get this woman's husband to do the “honorable thing” and relinquish his role as president because of his ongoing HOA violations. Folks in the comments section chimed in and gave the HOA president's wife some grief for thinking she had won the battle when, in fact, she was just being more difficult…

    UPDATE 1: at an unhinged HOA meeting, the board secretary (let's call her Omega Karen) had written and passed out copies of a two page, single space letter detailing in her opinion why my husband is unfit to be president.
